Tifway 419 is the sports-field and commercial standard. 60+ years of proven track record. Spec'd at LSU Tiger Stadium, the Saints practice fields, and most Louisiana high school football fields.
Tifway 419 is a USDA / UGA hybrid Cynodon dactylon released in 1960. For 60+ years it has been the dominant sports-field and commercial Bermuda across the southeastern United States.
Best fit: athletic fields (football, soccer, baseball outfields), golf-course tees and fairways, commercial properties along major arterials, and any full-sun lot that needs Bermuda's density and tight mowing tolerance. 419 was spec'd at LSU Tiger Stadium for decades.
Where 419 does not fit: residential where TifTuf's water savings matter more, or sports fields in north LA where Tahoma 31 or Latitude 36 cold tolerance reduces winter recovery time. 419 is the right pick when proven track record and traditional spec compatibility are the deciding factors.

419 is the 1960 sports-field standard with proven decades of athletic-field use. TifTuf is the 2015 UGA upgrade with 38% less water need. Pick 419 for sports fields, commercial spec compliance, and traditional installs. Pick TifTuf for residential and water-conscious installs.
419 is the proven Louisiana athletic standard. Tahoma 31 is the newer 2018 OSU release with better cold tolerance and similar sports-field quality. Pick 419 for traditional spec match. Pick Tahoma 31 for north LA athletic fields where winter dormancy is a real concern.
60+ years of proven performance under athletic-field stress, established maintenance protocols at every level (high school through pro), and tight blade density that holds up to cleat traffic. Newer Bermudas perform well but 419 has the institutional inertia of being the spec everyone knows.
Yes, but TifTuf is the smarter residential choice in Louisiana now. 419 needs more water and more frequent mowing than TifTuf. The athletic-field reputation is overkill for most residential yards.
419 is the most universally available Bermuda in Louisiana, which keeps pricing competitive. Typically priced as the baseline Bermuda. Contractor pricing applies.
No. 419 has zero shade tolerance and will thin to bare soil in less than 6 hours of direct sun. For shaded sections of a yard, use St. Augustine or Zoysia, not Bermuda.
