What Is It?

Meyer Sod Explained

Meyer Zoysia (also called Z-52) is a Zoysia japonica cultivar released by USDA in 1951. It is the original mainstream Zoysia and remains the most cold-tolerant Z. japonica widely grown in Louisiana.

Best fit: north and central Louisiana yards where winter freezes can damage less cold-tolerant Zoysias. Caddo, Bossier, Ouachita, Rapides, and the upper Florida Parishes all benefit from Meyer's USDA Zone 5-9 cold rating. Spring Valley Sod Farm in Ruston grows Meyer Z-52.

Where Meyer does not fit: south Louisiana coastal yards where Palisades' salt tolerance wins, or premium upscale installs (Geo, Zeon, Innovation are smarter). Meyer is the right pick when cold tolerance is the deciding factor.

How to Care for Meyer Sod

  • Watering during establishment: Water twice a day for first 10 days. Daily for week 2. Established Meyer needs about 0.75 to 1 inch per week. North Louisiana sees more pronounced summer drought stretches than the coast.
  • Mow height range: Maintain at 1.5 to 2.5 inches. Rotary or reel mower works. Cut higher going into fall to insulate the crown.
  • Fertilizer schedule: 3 applications per year. Spring, early summer, late summer. Skip late fall feed in north LA to avoid pushing growth before freeze.
  • Pre-emergent timing: Apply in early March in north LA. Second application 8-10 weeks later.
